Binance Suffers $6.3 Billion Hack, Pledges to Cover All User Losses

The world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, by means of both users and trading volume across the board, has been hacked.

Not a System Compromise

According to a recent announcement, the incident “may involve a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, which allowed an attacker to gain access to a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions.” Binance further revealed that they haven’t found any private key leak, pledging to share a detailed technical post-mortem as soon as the investigation is complete.

Binance’s initial investigation suggests that the security incident may involve a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop, which allowed an attacker to gain access to a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions. We have found no evidence of any wallet private key leak. We will share a detailed technical post-mortem once the investigation is complete and the facts are fully verified.

The estimated total impact sits at around $6.3B. We have worked with blockchain partners to freeze affected assets, with ~$3 billion frozen on-chain so far.
Binance will cover all losses from the SAFU fund and the company’s funds. User funds are safe. We will also publish an updated Proof of Reserves once the remediation is complete.

As an immediate precaution, Binance has:

– temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while security checks are completed;
– revoked the affected address authorisation;
– engaged law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners to trace and recover funds.

Our teams are working around the clock to resolve this issue safely and thoroughly. We are working closely with our law enforcement partners to confirm the identity of these criminals and bring them to justice.

Please rely only on official Binance channels for updates. Please feel free to contact Binance Customer Support if you have any further questions.

The exchange further revealed that the total impact, at the time of this writing, sits at around $6.3 billion. That said, together with multiple service providers and blockchain partners, they’ve managed to freeze about $3 billion on-chain at the time of the announcement.

User Funds are SAFU

Both the official X account of Binance and Yi He confirmed that users needn’t worry about their funds and that the firm will cover all losses from the SAFU fund, as well as the company’s own funds.

That said, they’ve also implemented immediate precaution measures, including:

  • temporary suspension of all deposits and withdrawals
  • revoked affected address authorization
  • engaged law enforcement and blockchain intelligence partners to trace and recover funds

Market-Wide Impact

The news immediately impacted the market, with Bitcoin dropping from above $81,000 to around $76,400 as the situation was unfolding.

Naturally, altcoins also sold off, with the entire market trading in the red since the news broke.

Data from Coinglass shows that the total liquidations on the derivatives market reached around $1.5 billion.

That said, many in the industry expressed optimism, outlining relatively modest declines amid what has clearly become the largest hack in recent years, impacting the biggest crypto exchange.
